<descript>
This point shapefile consists of the locations of species detected for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Wildlife Occurrence (WildObs) database in Florida. This spatial database contains attributes of wildlife observations that are the most commonly used by biologists. WildObs maintains records of species' distributions throughout the state in a database with a standardized format for recording and managing incidental, casual, or short-term systematic observations of wildlife. This database is a repository for data from planned surveys, contracted projects, and casual observations. Designed to be useful to biologists, particularly those with the Nongame Wildlife Program, WildObs maintains species lists and assists biologists in monitoring wildlife populations in protected or managed areas. In particular, the attributes associated with this spatial dataset were selected from the WildObs database as the most commonly used characteristics for biologists. This is an update to the FGDL layer WILDOBS_2010.
<purpose>Our goal is to provide a standardized format for recording and managing incidental, casual, or short-term systematic observations of wildlife. The system design is intended useful for biologists to maintain species lists or to track wildlife populations in protected our managed areas. Additionally this can be a repository for longer-term studies, or data from other sources, such as literature and contracted research projects.</purpose>
<supplinf>A database management system (Microsoft Access 2000, dBase IV, and Arc/View compatible) is available if you wish to manage your own data. This database contains forms for searching records and exporting records into GIS systems. Copies of the database structure and programs are available from the Division’s database and downloadable from http://dm.fwc.state.fl.us/wildobs/.</supplinf>

<procdesc>GeoPlan downloaded the data on February 25th, 2015 from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission - Fish and Wildlife Research Institute TRGIS website: http://ocean.floridamarine.org/TRGIS/Description_Layers_Terrestrial.htm wildlife_observations_point.zip wildlife_observations_point.shp The data was originally projected to: PCS_Albers GCS_North_American_1983 During the QA/QC process, GeoPlan performed the following tasks: - Reprojected the dataset to FGDL Albers using the following transformation: NAD_1983_To_HARN_Florida - Upcased all fields. - Added a DESCRIPT field based on the field [COMNAME]. If SPECIFLOC was not available,[SITETYPE_D] was used. - Added FGDLAQDATE based on date FGDL acquired the data. - Renamed the dataset to wildobs_2013.shp Please Note: Previous TRGIS data layers were misidentified in the metadata as being in Albers HARN. FFWCC-FWRI said all TRGIS data is PCS Albers (Not HARN). The data now has a HARN transformation and so all of the data is shifted now (<1m) from the previous FGDL version.</procdesc>

<procdesc>Various information on geographic location, species (number, age, sex, etc.), habitat and activities of target species (listed in WildObsManual.doc) were recorded on wildlife observation forms using Microsoft Access 2000. Suggested target species and groups vary with the seasons. The manual, available from the contact, provides details of each table and field of the database structure as well as overview of the contents. WildObs forms and the intranet site are not intended to replace study- specific data forms. The observation forms can also be used for casual observations. Location information can be recorded at several levels of accuracy on the field forms. Space is provided to record numbers of animals observed and to classify them according to age and sex. In addition, you can record 1 or 2 types of habitats occupied and activities observed. Details of the type of survey and type of count or estimation method used may also be recorded. Optionally, information on the type of managed area where the sighting was made can be noted, and provision is made to identify important wildlife use areas. Finally, space is provided for detailed notes on behavior, location, and survey type information. slopes, or edges of floodplains.</procdesc>

<resdesc>DOWNLOADABLE DATA</resdesc>
<distliab>The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from the Florida Department of Transportation. GIS data available in FGDL is collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources) who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the data source. University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no guarantees about the currentness of the data and suggests that data users check with the data source to see if more recent versions of the data exist. Furthermore, the GIS data available in the FGDL are provided 'as is'. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no warranties, guaranties or representations as to the truth, accuracy or completeness of the data provided by the data sources. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no representations or warranties about the quality or suitability of the materials, either expressly or implied, including but not limited to any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center shall not be liable for any damages suffered as a result of using, modifying, contributing or distributing the materials. A note about data scale: Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our webpage at: http://geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html</distliab>
