This dataset contains major institutions for incarcerated felons for the state of Florida. These facilities incarcerate felons convicted and sentenced to more than a year.
The data was created to serve as base information for use in GIS systems for a variety of planning and analytical purposes.
This dataset contains the Florida Department of Corrections major institutions for incarcerated felons. These major institutions (five privately run) are geographically grouped into four regions. The Tallahassee Central Office provides direction, policy, and operational and program oversight through the regional directors and their staff to all the facilities. These facilities incarcerate felons convicted and sentenced to more than a year. These inmates are transported from a county jail and enter our system through one of three male or two female reception centers strategically located throughout the state. Upon arrival at a reception center, an inmate is processed, tested, evaluated by health services, assessed for program needs, and his/her custody (security risks) determined. Custody is determined by reviewing the seriousness of their offenses, length of sentence, time remaining to serve, prior criminal record, escape history, prison adjustment, and other factors. The most serious offenders with the longest sentences and those least likely to adjust to institutional life are placed in more secure facilities. Based on the results of this process the inmate is then transferred to the appropriate facility.

Spatial and Attribute Information
GeoPlan collected the information in this dataset from the Florida Department of Corrections website (http://www.dc.state.fl.us/facilities/ciindex.html) in July of 2007. Tabular data was taken from the Summary of Florida State Correctional Facilities (http://www.dc.state.fl.us/pub/annual/0506/facil.html) and from an official FDOC spreadsheet of locations and contact information. Only facilities listed as major institutions were used in this dataset. That list, broken up by prison facility region, can be found here: (http://www.dc.state.fl.us/facilities/ciindex.html). Facilities were geocoded and individually verified using high resolution imagery. 66 out of 72 records were manually edited to better represent the location of the prison facility. - A DESCRIPT field was added based on NAME. - FGDLAQDATE was added based on date information was downloaded from source. - All fields were upcased
