This GIS data set represents the Florida shoreline as lines. Initially digitized in 1990 by USFWS under FWRI contract, the data set was created from the most current National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Nautical Charts available at the time. The scale of the source charts varied from 1:10,000 in some harbors to 1:80,000 in the Big Bend area. However, most of the source scale is 1:40,000. The current data set is the result of revisions to the 1990 version. Some areas, including inland areas where there is no chart coverage and areas that have needed more accuracy for individual projects, have been digitized from USGS 7.5-minute Quadrangles and Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrangles (DOQQs).
<purpose>FWRI created this for visual reference in maps at about 1:40k scale, or the largest scale available for an area.</purpose>
<supplinf>Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information. The source scale varies from 1:10,000 to 1:80,000.</supplinf>

THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA GEOPLAN CENTER SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES SUFFERED AS A RESULT OF USING, MODIFYING, CONTRIBUTING OR DISTRIBUTING THE MATERIALS. A note about data scale: Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analysis. <procdesc>This Florida shoreline was originally digitized in 1990 by USFWS under FWRI contract. In all cases, USFWS used the most detailed NOAA navigational charts available at the time (i.e. harbor areas were taken from 1:10000 and the Big Bend was taken from 1:80000). In some areas, nautical charts were insufficient and 1:24000 USGS quadrangles or DOQQs were used instead of the nautical charts. This is especially true along rivers.</procdesc>

The file was projected to FGDL Albers HARN. When received this shape file was a polygon. It was converted to polyline using the polygon to line function in ArcTool Box. The resulting polyline file was edited to remove the Northern and Western border of the state that did not correspond to any coastline. This was done using the split line tool while editing. - Reprojected data to FGDL Albers HPGN - ATTRIBUTE field was recalculated to COASTLINE from LAND - Added a DESCRIPT field to attribute table based on ATTRIBUTE - Added a FGDLAQDATE field based on date received from source - Renamed shapefile from fl_40k_nowater_poly to COAST - Recalculated SHAPE.LEN using X-Tools</procdesc>
